Installations

Through the years I have created installations for many spaces, the works are a reaction to the space itself. The themes deal with energy, transformation, and temporality; the materials are simple and have a fragile quality.

In the photographic installations the images refer to time and space and the non-material.

1999 To Become Nameless
Installation for The Water Tower, an exhibition space for contemporary art, Vlissingen, NL.

The installation consists of a series of photographs of shadows in the water. Dimensions: rectangular frames; 39 x 28 x 3 inch (100 x 70 x 6 cm), round frame; 28 x 28 x 3 inch (60 x 60 x 6 cm)

1993 Why is the Sky Blue
Installation for The Waag, Leiden, NL

I was asked to create an installation for the historic 16th century building which reflected on the theme “the wall”, the thought that immediately struck me was… what is behind the wall?

An installation of seven large photographs of clouds in zinc frames. There is a text sandblasted on the glass of the three round frames.
Dimensions: 4 rectangular works; 48 x 60 x 4 inch (120 x 150 x 8 cm), round works; diameter, 39 x 39 x 4 inch (100 x 100 x 8 cm)

1989 When Stars Were Formed Installation for The Chapel Gallery, Gronningen NL

A massive stone altar remained in the center of the former catholic chapel. The installation consisted of seven columns placed in a circle before the altar. Within each column was a different star-like zinc form. On the alter was a time lapsed photograph of stars in a zinc frame. Daylight lamps created a cool blue area of light around the columns.

1987 The Space Between

A project for Warehouse 4 in Amsterdam NL. First chamber, materials: pigment.

Warehouse 4 in the harbor of Amsterdam, was used for years to store wood brought by boot from Russia. The project was in three parts in connecting chambers below the building. Every sound echoed in the still chambers which intensified the experience of the space. The work was a reflection on this experience.

1986 Seven Works for Seven Rooms

A project in a former fire house in Amsterdam NL. Room 6, materials: tar paper and nails.

The abandoned building was partially demolished and the elements of nature had entered it.
The works were reflections on the energy of each space. I used materials found in the building.
